Climate youth delegate

Every autumn, representatives of nearly 200 countries gather at the UN Climate Conference for two weeks to hold discussions on how to slow down the global temperature rise and adapt to climate change. The delegations include heads of state, climate experts, negotiators, representatives of parliament and NGOs, and more and more youth delegates every year.

The Youth Climate Delegate is elected to represent Estonian youth at the UN Climate Conference or COP for two years. Estonian youth will be represented by Karin-Annika Luga at the COPs in 2025 and Marie Johanna Univer 2026.

What does a youth delegate do at the COP?

  • Conveys the views of Estonian youth, gathers knowledge and takes part in discussions, conveys information to Estonian youth
  • Youth climate delegate agenda
  • Communicates and establishes contacts with representatives of other international organizations
  • Accompany negotiators to negotiation sessions
  • Participates in the side event and pavilion organization team
  • Kindly shares his/hers experience both during and after the conference on (social) media and with the Ministry of Climate and the Youth Environmental Council.
  • Cooperates with previous climate youth delegates.
  •  After the conference youth delegate must prepare a summary of his/hers activities and present it to both the public and the Youth Environmental Council.

The youth climate delegate is elected for two years. This fall, we invite a team of volunteers to help the northern delegate, who will support the delegate from Estonia, while getting familiar with the format of the COP and learning more about international climate policy making. Team recruitment will take place in September.

Almost 30 years ago, in June 1992, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was signed in Rio de Janeiro with the participation of over 150 countries. Every year, representatives of 200 countries gather for two weeks to agree on actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change and slow global temperature rise.
