The award was given to Estonia together with ten other European Union member states for a joint initiative: in 2025, the countries appealed to the European Commission to provide stronger political support and more reliable financing for the development of high-speed rail.
"The development of high-speed rail traffic is a strategic goal for us, as it strengthens the connectivity of Estonia and the whole of Europe. Fast and comfortable railways increase security, support tourism and help companies reach new markets more easily. Railways are one of the few modes of transport that can offer high capacity with low environmental impact," said Marten Kokk, Secretary General of the Ministry of Climate. "Therefore, the more good railway connections Europe has, the easier it is for people and goods to move, and the more efficiently the entire European economy functions."
The European Railway Award is the highest recognition in the sector and has been awarded since 2007. In the past, it has recognised national leaders, major projects and innovative solutions in the railway sector. The award is presented by the European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) and the Union of European Railway Industries (UNIFE).
This year’s award ceremony took place at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Belgium and brought together hundreds of representatives from the transport and policy sectors in Europe. The event also discussed the future of European rail policy, including the need for investment, the development of cross-border connections and the role of rail in achieving climate goals and ensuring security.
