According to Climate Minister Yoko Alender, the EGT has made significant progress under the leadership of Sirli Sipp Kulli. “The EGT has elevated itself from being a center of expertise in its field to a new level by seeking the status of a research institution for the first time. The Arbavere Research Center has been established to conduct applied and scientific studies aimed at better understanding Estonia’s subsurface. Additionally, innovative subsurface geothermal pilot plants have been launched, providing clean and affordable heating to households,” highlighted Minister Alender.
Sirli Sipp Kulli emphasized the importance of raising awareness in society about the value of high-quality geological knowledge as a foundation for daily life. “Over the past seven years, the Estonian Geological Survey has supported society with expertise on surface and groundwater, as well as geothermal energy. We have also conducted research in seismology, radon, seabed studies, construction materials, and critical raw materials. Notably, our scientific collaboration with Estonian universities and geological surveys of other countries has intensified, thanks to our highly professional team. I continue my role with pride and gratitude and aim to further accelerate the development of the Geological Survey,” said Sirli Sipp Kulli.
Sipp Kulli has led the EGT since January 23, 2020. She holds a degree in chemical engineering and a master’s degree in natural sciences from Tallinn University of Technology. Her previous experience includes serving as the head of the Estonian branch of the international group Intertek Caleb-Brett, working on development projects at AS Viru Keemia Grupp, and serving as a researcher at Tallinn University of Technology. She is also the founder and board member of Biotatec, a biotechnology company focused on developing waste and ore valorization technologies. From 2017 to 2020, she served as Chair of the Supervisory Boards of AS Metrosert and AS Teede Tehnokeskus. Sirli is a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences’ Marine Sciences Commission and the Council of the Geological Society of Estonia.
Under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Climate, the EGT is responsible for representing the state in general geological research and studies, preserving and ensuring access to geological information, advising government institutions, and raising public awareness about the subsurface.
